The film begins with Lallan Singh (Abhishek Bachchan), a goon working for a corrupt politician Prosenjit Bhattacharya (Om Puri), shooting Michael Mukherjee (Ajay Devgn), a student leader who wants to clean up politics, on his bike. Michael falls off the bridge into the water below, which is witnessed by Arjun Balachandran (Vivek Oberoi), a carefree youth who wants to go to the US for higher studies.
The film then goes into a flashback mode and shows the lives of these three characters before the incident. Lallan is a violent and abusive husband who loves his wife Shashi (Rani Mukerji) but also beats her up frequently. He gets into trouble with Prosenjit when he refuses to kill Michael on his orders. Michael is an influential student activist who wants to remove corruption from politics and society. He is in love with his neighbour Radhika (Esha Deol), who supports his cause.
