Best Buy Steam Mop Hard Floor Cleaner

For an outstanding mop steam cleaner, look no further than this Polti model. Its flexible joint helps you clean under furniture and kitchen appliances, and its long 7.5-metre flex means you won't need to keep switching plug sockets. The water tank heats up in just 15 seconds, but note that it takes several seconds longer to emit steam, even when the ready light is on.

Performance-wise, it fared impressively on hard and sealed floors but not as well on carpet. The built-in bristles at the rear of the floorhead efficiently scrubbed stubborn grime off vinyl, but the bristles on the included round brush started to bend after tackling particularly stubborn food remnants.

Kärcher's most powerful steam cleaner is a large cylinder model that comes equipped with ample accessories to cover most household cleaning tasks. We found it straightforward to assemble and quiet in use.

There's no need to worry about running out of steam before you finish your floors, thanks to a high-capacity 1.5-litre water tank and 0.5-litre steam boiler reservoir. The tank heats up in a surprisingly speedy three minutes and offers a great range of steam outputs.

This robust steam cleaner has a triangular brush that detaches from the floorhead for scrubbing and deep cleaning. It offers low, medium and high steam settings and converts into a handheld for tackling windows and worktops.

Its multiple steam settings include a steam blast feature for eradicating embedded floor stains, but there's no way of telling when the steam is ready until it starts emitting. The mophead detaches at the press of a button, no handling required, but the cloths shrunk when we washed them according to the manufacturer's instructions. It's not freestanding and the handle isn't telescopic, but it can also be used as a handheld. It's a trusty choice if you've got a lot of cleaning and little time to do it.

Many people like the idea of cutting down on chemical cleaners with a steam mop. These machines use only water and produce steam to help loosen grime on floors. Some come with attachments for cleaning grout and certain fabric, making them an extremely versatile and powerful part of a cleaning routine.

Be aware that steam mops aren't made for every floor or every fabric. Even ones that claim to be gentle enough for hardwood or laminate may damage flooring. Manufacturers say their mops should be safe for ceramic tile and stone floors, but you may still want to spot test before doing a full run.

We tested five steam mops on a variety of stains on several types of flooring. You can find more about our methodology here. We also spoke to cleaning and flooring experts for tips on choosing and using a steam mop.

Lightweight yet powerful, the Bissell PowerFresh Deluxe checks a lot of boxes without being overly pricey. It doesn't come with any attachments, but if you're just looking for a floor cleaner, it's a solid choice.

Two washable microfiber pads come with the PowerFresh, one of which is nubbier and meant for spills and stains that are harder to clean. But what really improved the cleaning performance was removing the mop head to use a brush that's attached to the body of the mop. It's a bit like a scrub brush with bright orange bristles that you don't have to get on your hands and knees to use. This is a hands-free operation, though you do need to turn the mop off first so you don't release steam while your foot is close by.

An all-around good cleaner, the PowerFresh Pet earned high marks in all our tests, doing the second-best job on egg and mustard. It did leave some traces of sticky residue in our honey tests though. Like the PowerFresh Deluxe, the PowerFresh Pet comes with two reusable microfiber pads, a smooth one for everyday use and a textured one for tougher messes.

It should serve you well if you're mainly using it as a floor mop, but the real reason to buy this model is all its attachments. The PowerFresh Pet comes with three brushes, two for the bathroom and one for the kitchen. The bristles are different colors so you don't mix them up, which is a nice touch. You also get a scraper, grout tool, and fabric steamer. There's a bag for all the attachments, which makes them easier to store.

While we still wouldn't recommend using the Shark Steam & Scrub S7001 on laminate, wood, or other water-and-heat-adverse floors, we liked the control it offered with its three steam levels. The button lets you select between light, regular, and deep modes depending on what you're cleaning.

In order to see how steam mops compare in cleaning capabilities, we saw how well each cleaned dried-on egg, mustard, and honey on a variety of surfaces, including tile, wood, and laminate (though we don't recommend using steam mops on laminate or wood floors).

All you have to do is glide it effortlessly across the floor and it will do the hard work for you. Even tougher stains are dealt with, and I just had to leave the mop over the mess, letting its mop cloths do the work for me.

In our tests the Dyad performed superbly, cleaning up loose debris and tougher stains and bringing hard floors back to their best. And with battery life of up to 35 minutes, this floor cleaner should be able to cope with large areas without needing to be recharged.

All of our best steam cleaners have been reviewed by home tech expert Caramel Quin, our Ecommerce Editor Molly Cleary or our freelance Joanne Lewsley. You can click through to our steam cleaner reviews to see how they got on with them in her own homes, complete with pictures and comparisons. We have voted the Vax Steam Fresh Combi S86-SF-C as the best steam cleaner in 2022. Alternatively, if you want something a little more versatile, then the Polti Vaporetto Smart 100_B also comes (very) highly recommended.

The most straightforward steam mops start at 50, but up to 150 is average for a convertible upright. These are steam mops that double as smaller, handheld cleaners. Budget upwards of 300 for a cylinder model with much more steam power.

A.k.a. 2-in-1 cleaners, these are upright steam mops where the steam generator can pop out from the middle to be used as a smaller, handheld cleaner. They come with various tools for steam cleaning smaller stuff.

Feeling the need to refresh your space One of the best steam cleaners is bound to be a big help, with features that go a little further than your usual mop and bucket routine to get things ship-shape.

How does a steam cleaner work They use high-powered steam, often in a number of ways (thanks to attachments) to clean and sanitise all number of surfaces in your home, not just your floors. We're talking behind your fridge, your shower, and your hobs, for serious value for money.

We know how important it is to have hands-on experience with the products we recommend, which is why we've reviewed all of the steam cleaners that you'll find below so that we can give you our honest findings on which type will suit you best.

This superb upright steam mop has a triangular floorhead, two cloths, and a carpet glider, securing you value for money from the offset. You can pop the head off to reveal a medium-sized triangular brush perfect for scrubbing.

This steam cleaner never let us down during testing; in fact, our tester Carmel thought it was so excellent that she found it difficult to step away from it as she envisioned other things in her home she could clean.

In our tests, we found this cleaner was ready to use in less than 30 seconds. The steam itself is variable and powerful on the top setting. Carmel also liked the fact that it can stand up independently when you need to pause cleaning.

The Black & Decker 10-in-1 Steam Mop FSMH13E10 took just 12 seconds to heat up and start cleaning during testing. You can't choose different steam levels, so controls are a simple on and off. While it's great on floors, our reviewer Carmel did find that tile and wood took a while to dry after use.

During the review process, our writer Carmel found we liked the design and how easy it was to convert back and forth. She loved the plastic tray that clips to the underside and holds all four supplied tools (concentrator, scraper and two shapes of brush). If your steam cleaning is a mix of floors and fiddly smaller things then the Bissell is hard to beat because your tools are always on board and converting is a doddle.

On the main side of the pad, you steam clean as normal. The pad is big and rectangular, ideal for cleaning large areas fast. Flip the floorhead back on itself to use the other side, then push the whole machine down to get a powerful steam blast that sprays directly forwards onto the floor.

If you only want a steam cleaner to clean floors, this is powerful and the double-sided floorhead and two cleaning pads mean it can tackle large homes with ease. Check out the best Shark vacuums for more floorcare buys from the same brand.

The Hoover Steam Capsule 2 in 1 CA2IN1D is an all-rounder, and earned high praise from our reviewer Carmel. It's got a design that many in search of the best steam mop will gravitate towards. Our first impression was that it's an annoyance to assemble it, as you'll need a screwdriver. It does look great though, and the handle is very ergonomic.

At Ideal Home, we know that in order to give you our opinion of the best steam cleaners on the market, we need to have tested them ourselves. That's why all of the steam cleaners within this guide have been tried out by either by our freelancer Carmel Quin, or our Ecommerce Editor Molly Cleary.
